Easy Star Battle is for getting started: 6×6 grids with one star per row, column and region. You solve them by crossing out the cells around each star and spotting which regions fit in a single row.

How to play: a game solved step by step

The best way to learn is to watch a game. This is a 6×6 grid with one star per row, column and region. Use the arrows to step through it: the cells each step talks about are marked, and nothing is guessed.

Step 1 of 11

The yellow region lies entirely in row 1. The star in row 1 has to be the yellow one, so the rest of row 1 is ruled out.

The rules

Every row, every column and every colored region gets the same number of stars: one in the easy and medium grids, two in hard and expert. Two stars can't touch, whether side by side or diagonally. Every grid has exactly one solution.

The levels

Easy (6×6, one star): you solve it by crossing out the cells around each star and seeing which regions fit in a single row. Medium (8×8, one star): asks you to count two regions at once. Hard (10×10, two stars): the classic championship format. Expert (10×10, two stars): you'll get stuck several times, and it asks you to count three or four regions, look at two rows together or split the stars among 2×2 squares.

The hint

The hint doesn't just place the star for you: it shows you the next step and why, and points out the cells that matter. With the arrows in the note you can reread the hints it has already given you.
